Top Kenyan athletes tour Durbs, Mother City

Daniel Mothowagae spent a few days with two of Kenya’s most accomplished marathon runners, Dennis Kimetto and Wilson Kipsang, on their recent tour of Durban and Cape Town.

Kimetto (the current world marathon record holder in 2:02:57) and Kipsang (the newly-crowned Marathon Majors champion) came to South Africa as the guests of the inaugural Global Athletics Conference that was held in Durban last weekend.

They met Bafana Bafana prior to their Afcon qualifier against Sudan at Moses Mabhida Stadium last Saturday before they left for Cape Town.

In the Mother City, the tall Kenyans teamed up with SA’s marathon king Lusapho April at the invitation of the trio’s apparel sponsor Adidas. They also spent a day at the Endurocad Development Academy in Stellenbosch, the institution that is owned by SA marathon Olympic medallist Elana Meyer.

The Kenyans wrapped up their tour yesterday and Kimetto headed straight to the World Athletics Gala in Monaco, where he has been shortlisted for the IAAF Athlete of the Year.
