Top kwaito star’s weekend in jail after rape charge

2013-11-03 10:00

A top kwaito star has spent a weekend in jail after he was arrested for rape.

The musician cannot be named for legal reasons.

He was arrested in the Johannesburg CBD by the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit on Friday.

The kwaito star was detained in the holding cells at the Honeydew Police Station. He is due to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

A police source said the man visited the complainant’s Honeydew apartment in March and allegedly forced himself on her.

The woman opened a case of rape against him about two weeks ago.

A police officer who is close to the case said the award-winning star pretended to be a witness and allegedly phoned a Honeydew’s police captain immediately after the case was opened asking for the investigating officer’s contact details.

“Apparently, they gave him the contact details of the investigating officer. He phoned him and pleaded with him to drop the charges against him,” said the officer.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Neville Malila confirmed on Friday that a rape case had been opened.

“We can confirm that a 32-year-old male was arrested and detained earlier today on a Honeydew rape case that was reported two weeks ago,” he said.
