Five celebs vie for a leading role in TV drama

Five of South Africa’s top actresses and TV stars are going head-to-head over the lead role of a gold digger in the SABC?2 drama Muvhango.

They are Top Billing presenter Bonang Matheba, The Link presenter Lerato Kganyago, celebrated actress Terry Pheto, model Gail Mabalane and Intersexions actress Kay Matidze.

A source close to the show, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Kganyago, Matidze and Mabalane had already auditioned for the role about two weeks ago and the producers were impressed with their performances.

“I can tell you that this is a war. They auditioned for the role of a young woman from the rural areas who migrated to Jozi and became a gold digger,” the insider said.

However, the war being referred to is the apparent enmity between Kganyago and Matheba.?The drama between them goes back to September last year when Matheba left the SABC?1 music show, Live.

At the time, there was talk that the broadcaster wanted Kganyago to present both Live and magazine show The Link. But then, Matheba’s friend, choreographer Somizi Mhlongo, publicly said that Kganyago was not up to the task.

Now, Kganyago – who has been ridiculed as a Bonang “copycat” by the latter’s fans on Twitter – is said to be very upset that she’s going up against Matheba for the role.

City Press has been reliably informed that if she had known, she never would have auditioned.

Fans of the show will have to wait until January for producers to announce who will be playing the character because they are still waiting for Pheto and Matheba to audition.

“Bonang was supposed to have pitched up for the auditions about two weeks ago but she failed to do so. When they inquired, she told them that she was overseas for some shoot. They are still in talks with Terry’s agent over the role,” said the insider.

After missing her audition, Matheba contacted the audition panel and told them she was interested in exploring acting this year and was still willing to audition if they wanted her to.

Matheba is also the local face of cosmetics giant Revlon and was announced this week as the “spokesmodel” for Woolworths lingerie.

Another source close to the show confirmed that Matidze, Kganyago and Mabalane had already auditioned for the role but said they did not know that Matheba and Pheto were also being?considered the producers were also considering Matheba and Pheto.

Kganyago declined to comment and referred us to her publicist Simphiwe Majola, who confirmed that Kganyago auditioned for the role but said they did not know that she was competing against others.

Pheto denied that she had been asked to audition.

Muvhango spokesperson Amanda Ngudle confirmed that the five were battling it out for the role.

Ngudle confirmed that they were still waiting for Matheba and Pheto to audition.
