Tourism Council welcomes SAA CEO appointment

2010-02-25 09:14

The Tourism Business Council of SA (TBCSA) has welcomed the

appointment of Siza Mzimela as the new chief executive officer of SA Airways

(SAA) today.

Council CEO Mmatsatsi Marobe described the appointment as key not

only for SAA, but for the sector as a whole.

Mzimela, who is the first woman to be at the helm of SAA, was

announced as replacement for acting CEO, Chris Smyth, earlier today.

She had been with the airline’s domestic partner, SA Express, since

2003.

“We believe that her experience within aviation, particularly her

previous experience with SAA and her successful management of SA Express, makes

her well equipped to deal with some of the challenges that the national carrier

currently faces,” Marobe said.

“We view this appointment as an indication that government has

heeded the call from both the public and private sector to fill important

positions that currently lie vacant in the different parastatals,” she

said.

Marobe said Mzimela did not have an easy task ahead of her, but

that she does have the support of the tourism private sector.

“TBCSA has had a good working relationship with her and we look

forward to continuing this relationship during her tenure at SAA,” Marobe

said.
