Tourism minister expects a bumper year

2010-10-28 13:38

Foreign arrivals in South Africa in the first seven months of this

year were almost three-quarters of a million up on the corresponding period in

2009, tourism minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said today.

Speaking at a Blue Flag ceremony at Mossel Bay’s Santos beach, he

said this 4.6 million figure represented an 18.1% increase.

There had been growth in arrivals from all “source regions”, the

steepest being a 173% increase from Central and South America.

“I have no doubt that 2010 is going to be a bumper year for tourism

in South Africa,” he said.

Blue Flag is an international annual award given to beaches that

meet excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental

information and environmental management.

Santos is one of 27 South African beaches that have Blue Flag

status.
