Tourists narrowly escape floods

Five German tourists had a close shave along the Wild Coast this week when their vehicle landed in a river and was swept away, Dispatch Online reported today.

East Londoner Darren Hanner, who witnessed the incident near Hole in the Wall resort, said they were lucky to escape.

He said the family had tried to cross a low-level bridge over the Mpaku River in a Jeep Cherokee on Tuesday.

When they reached the middle of the submerged bridge, the vehicle was swept away.

The incident happened near Zithulele Hospital, about 7km from the resort.

People who witnessed the incident, including Hanner, rushed to their rescue. But the family managed to get out of the vehicle and swim to safety.

“We could see the father and other kids on the one side of the river while the mother and her daughter were on the other side,” said Hanner.

When the family managed to get out, the vehicle had already been swept about 250m down the river.

“The mother and her daughter were in a state of shock,” said Hanner.

“It took us almost three hours to save what was inside the vehicle, which is still wedged in the river.”?
