Trade unionist appointed new CCMA board chair

2013-11-05 11:34

Former trade unionist Daniel Dube has been appointed chairperson of the board of the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Dube was appointed by Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant to replace outgoing chairperson Tania Cohen, the CCMA said in a statement today.

“Mr Dube’s commitment to social justice and economic development in the world of work will advance the already significant contribution made by the CCMA to the South African labour market and strengthen fraternal ties with stakeholders globally,” CCMA director Nerine Kahn said.

“Mr Dube has had a long history in the labour movement and made a significant contribution in the struggle to democracy.”

The CCMA board is made up of an independent chair and representatives of government, organised labour, and organised business.

Dube was elected the first president of metal workers’ union Numsa in 1987. He held the position until 1991.

He was also a member of union federation Cosatu’s executive committee from 1985 to 1991.

He has served on a number of company boards, including Eskom.
