Traffic cop killed in shootout

2010-09-17 15:16

A Gauteng traffic police officer and an unidentified man were left dead after a shootout at a petrol station in Rosettenville, south of Johannesburg.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Eugene Opperman said the two officers stopped at a Shell Garage on the corner of Kliprivier Road and Rifle Range Road at around 4pm yesterday and one went inside a vehicle manned by an unidentified man.

“It appears a scuffle ensued and the man in the vehicle fired shots at the officers, killing the one and wounding the other in the stomach. The other officer returned fire fatally wounding the suspect,” Opperman said.

He said the wounded officer was taken to a local hospital.

Opperman said the motive for the shooting was still unknown.

He said attacks on police officers take place daily in Gauteng and police are working on eliminating the problem.

Obed Sibasa, spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Police, identified the injured officer as principal provincial inspector Rashid Gajoo.

“He is in a critical condition at the Union Hospital,” Sibasa said.

Sibasa confirmed that there was an argument before the shooting but could not elaborate.

“We are still awaiting the results of police investigation,” Sibasa said.

The names of the deceased were withheld pending notification of their next of kin.
