We asked our readers to tell us about their trips across SA. This week, we feature two finalists of the Sho’t Left travel writing competition. Toasted Ice takes us to the white buildings and beaches of Paternoster

I have always been overly cautious of double entendres, and that is the main reason I have never attended an all-white party. Being a rather conservative black person, I never wanted to take the chance of getting dressed in my whitest threads, only to arrive at a party where only whites were welcome.

It turns out, there is another type of all-white party out there that suits me just fine.

The Cape west coast fishing village of Paternoster looks as if the local contractor tasked with painting all the houses and other buildings started with a white undercoat, and then just never bothered to return, leaving the tourist destination looking like an extension of heaven.

It takes a mere 90 minutes to drive from Cape Town to Paternoster, which is a chance for your mind and body to gradually acclimatise to the beauty that is to follow, in the form of a quaint fishing village with the most striking houses – every building in the town is white, from the various curio shops and restaurants to the holiday homes.

You might even feel like an unpatriotic South African as you plan ways of requesting the local five-star hotel’s management to remove our colourful national flag from the flagpole because it just seems to spoil the pure picture.

Wherever you look, your eyes spot all things white: the giant seagulls that patrol the shore, the seashells that litter the beach, and what seems to be extra white foam that forms as the waves crash into the boulders.

For the adrenaline junkies

For those who kindly asked their creator for energy drinks instead of blood to run in their veins, this little village offers a large number of adrenaline-inducing activities to keep them more than occupied.

These include kayaking to Penguin Colony with local fitness guru Dianne Heesom-Green, taking advantage of the Cape Doctor via kitesurfing, and spotting as many species of fish as possible while snorkelling.

But every high has to end and there is no better way to do this than by sampling some of the offering at the local restaurants. Paternoster is ideal for those seeking a culinary adventure, and this sets the town apart from its counterparts in the region.

Those responsible for preparing food often view their kitchens as laboratories, where only the most experimentally phenomenal food is served.

Try Gaatjie, Noisy Oyster, Oep ve Koep and Voorstandt.

But just in case you are really stubborn and are not yet convinced, Paternoster has some significant landmarks, including the fully functioning Cape Columbine Lighthouse, the Columbine Nature Reserve andthe aptly named Tietiesbaai – where the boulders resemble DD breasts.

Sounds exactly like heaven to me.
