2011-05-16 08:58

An earth tremor occurred in Katlehong, east of Johannesburg, on Monday morning, the National Seismograph Network said.

Project manager Ian Saunders said the 3.1 magnitude tremor hit the Katlehong area at 7.15am.

“There were earth tremors before in that area last year, also up to a magnitude 3. It’s normal.”

He did not know what caused it.

“It’s difficult to speculate.”

This followed a 4.3 magnitude earthquake in the southern Cape on Saturday.

The tremor, was felt for at least five seconds in towns like Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Sedgefield, George, Mossel Bay, Prince Albert and in the Langkloof, according to the website of the South African Weather and Disaster Information Service. – Sapa and Die Burger
