Tributes to women

2011-08-12 12:26

With Women’s Month celebrations in full throttle Lesley Mofokeng couldn’t resist playing the DJ and compiled a list of must-play tunes in tribute to strong, amazing, powerful and beautiful women

Respect – Aretha Franklin
R.E.S.P.E.C.T has resonated with the oppressed and the disadvantaged. It’s similar to Wathint’ Abafazi Wathint’ Imbokodo, the battle cry of the South African women’s rights movement. Respect was released 44 years ago.

Sisters Are Doin’ It For Themselves – Eurythmics (featuring Aretha Franklin)

This 1985 song coaxed women to get out of the kitchen and start doing it for themselves. Women slipped on the power suits and got down to business.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun – Cyndi Lauper
Blondes have more fun, or so the saying goes, but every woman still knows how to have girly fun and let her hair down.

Run The World (Girls) – Beyoncé
Beyoncé is fast becoming the face of female power.

Her hits Irreplaceable, Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) and Run The World celebrate womanhood and prove that women rule.

You Make Me Feel (Like A Natural Woman) – Aretha Franklin
A beautiful ode to everything feminine and natural. Sisters have been singing along to this one for years.

Miss Independent – Ne-Yo
My favourite artist is not threatened by a powerful, independent woman who pays her own way.

Survivor – Destiny’s Child
Considering what women have to get through every day, it is remarkable that they still maintain their beauty and poise.

I’m Every Woman – Chaka Khan
A celebration of self-love, confidence, strength and power.

It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World – Curtis Mayfield
On the surface, this song may sound chauvinistic and sexist, but it actually toasts the important roles women play in a man’s world.

Woman Got A Right To Be – Caiphus Semenya
The veteran singer spits in the face of women batterers and misogynists.

Superwoman – Alicia Keys
Women have performed amazing feats on the family, community and the workplace front. It’s the stuff superheroines are made of.

Strength of a Woman – Lebo Sekgobela
This song was released this year by the debutante gospel singer. Its lyrics praise tenacity and a never-say-die attitude, and its intense melody surely guarantees it a place in the classic South African song book.
