Cabinet has appointed public enterprises director-general Tshediso Matona as the new Eskom chief executive.

Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown announced in Parliament today that Matona would be at the helm of the power producer for five years.

Matona is the first Eskom boss in 10 years to not come from within the utility’s ranks. He takes over the hot seat from acting chief executive Collin Matjila on September 1.

Matona is from a policy background. His career spans policy planning in international trade, industrial development and investment facilitation, and he has worked as a trade negotiator at the World Trade Organisation in Geneva.

More recently, he was the director-general at the department of trade and industry for five years before joining the department of public enterprises, where he has been for the past three years.

Brown said Matona understood “the present debate” around Eskom’s challenges, which include a race against time to avert a downgrade to junk status by credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s, which would make borrowing money more expensive.

Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger, who was not aware of the announcement at first, referred queries to the public enterprises department.
