Tutu says he’s doing just fine

“I’m all right!”

These were Archbishop Desmond Tutu’s words from his Cape Town hospital bed.

Tutu (81) was admitted to hospital earlier this week.

His foundation issued a statement on Wednesday to announce that he was being treated for “a persistent infection and to undergo tests to discover the underlying cause”.

Political parties across the spectrum have wished the Nobel Peace Prize winner a speedy recovery.

The ANC issued a statement saying it wished him “a speedy recovery and trusts that he will soon resume his noble duties in the transformative socioeconomic agenda of our country”.

The DA, too, wished the fiery and outspoken archbishop a speedy recovery.

Tutu – who has survived cancer – said nothing “malignant’’ was found after the first round of tests and he was as chirpy and jokey as ever.

But he did point out that he knew he was no longer a spring chicken.

“The doctors want the infection to clear, so I’m here for five days. They still have to decide on the type of treatment I need.’’

He said that even though he was in hospital on Freedom Day, he was going to once again be celebrating the birth of South Africa’s democracy.
