Two MK graves to be exhumed

2013-03-11 11:20

Two graves, believed to contain the remains of two missing men, would be exhumed tomorrow at the Avalon cemetery in Soweto, authorities said in a joint statement.

“The two young men, who served as couriers for Umkhonto weSizwe (MK), disappeared on 13 and 14 November 1988, respectively,” the National Prosecuting Authority and Government Communication and Information System said today.

They were Corlett “Lolo” Sono (21) and Siboniso Anthony Shabalala (19), who were among many reported missing to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

It was established that two bodies with multiple stab wounds were found in a field in Diepkloof Extension, Soweto, on the morning of November 15 1988. The two were taken to a state mortuary and later buried as unidentified people with a large group of paupers in Avalon cemetery. The families identified them from photographs taken of the bodies.

The NPA’s missing persons task team and the police’s victim identification centre would exhume the graves from 9am tomorrow. DNA tests would be conducted after the exhumation to confirm their identities.

“Further investigations into the deaths ... are being conducted by the SA Police Service.”
