Two children killed in bus crash

2011-01-31 07:32

A Pretoria father looked on helplessly as a bus ploughed into his family’s car, killing both his children and seriously injuring his wife, paramedics reported today.

His wife, six-year-old son and one-year-old daughter were inside the stationary car that had broken down when the bus slammed into it, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks.

The accident happened on Zambezi Road in Cullinan in the early hours of this morning.

“It is believed that two vehicles had been stationary at the roadside after one carrying a couple and their two children had broken down. The fully laden bus rounded a bend and left the road, ploughing into the parked cars,” said Wicks.

“The bus came to rest against the light motor vehicle. The children, thought to have been asleep in the back seat at the time, sustained critical injuries and died prior to the arrival of medics.”

The injured woman was stabilised on the scene and taken to hospital.

Her husband and the father of the two children was standing near the car when the crash happened.

He was unharmed.

The bus passengers escaped unhurt.
