Two initiates die in Western Cape

Initiates at a Stellenbosch initiation site will be medically screened after two men died and another had to be hospitalised, the Western Cape cultural affairs and sport department has said.

“We will, in consultation with representatives of the relevant cultural communities, take whatever steps are necessary to ensure the safety of our initiates,” it said yesterday in a statement.

“One death is a death too many.”

Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said Cloetesville police were informed of three people who were circumcised on Monday near the Idas Valley dam.

Police took the men to the hospital, where two died, he said.

“There is one survivor who is still in hospital.”

The men who died were aged 18 and 19 and were from Nyanga and Gugulethu. They went to Stellenbosch on a bus.

“No arrests have been made,” Kinana said.

The department said it was working with various stakeholders to ensure that the existing management of the site was replaced with a new management committee.

The remaining initiates would be medically screened and those who were fit would be taken to an alternative site, the department said.

The monitoring of activities at all other initiation sites in the Western Cape would immediately be stepped up, it said.
