Two policemen killed by gunmen

2011-07-25 07:22

Two flying squad police officers were killed by gunmen near Zonkizizwe on the East Rand.

One of the officers died at the scene and the second man died on his way to hospital, said the police’s Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

The incident happened around 8pm yesterday when the East Rand flying squad officers stopped behind a “suspicious” bakkie with two occupants at Zonkizizwe outside Katlehong.

“Immediately after the police stopped, the occupants of the vehicle came out and fired several shots at the officers,” Dlamini said.

The men abandoned the bakkie, which had run out of petrol, and then hijacked a Toyota Corolla.

They stole the occupant’s cell phones before driving away in their car, Dlamini said.

“At this stage it is not clear if a shoot-out ensued but the police officers, both warrant officers aged 45 and 47, were shot in the upper body.”

The men also stole the officers’ firearms.

A 9mm pistol was found in the bakkie, Dlamini said.

The hijacked Toyota Corolla was also found abandoned a few kilometres from the scene with blood inside.

“One of the suspects might have been wounded while they were shooting at the police officers,” he said.

No arrests had been made but police were still searching.
