Two pupils killed in Mossel Bay minibus accident

2010-09-23 10:00

Two pupils died when a minibus carrying members of the Worcester Gymnasium under-14 cricket team overturned several times on the N2 highway near Mossel Bay, according to the Western Cape Department of Health.

Spokesperson Faiza Steyn said today that the accident occurred yesterday at 3.40pm on the N2 in Welgevonden between Albertinia and Gouritzmond.

One pupil was killed instantly and the other died in hospital.

“Two more are in a critical condition at George Hospital.”

Steyn said nine other pupils were treated for serious, moderate and minor injuries at nearby hospitals, and some had been discharged.

According to Steyn, two minibuses – one with a trailer – were on their way to George for a cricket match.

Western Cape Traffic Safety’s Harold Williams said the minibuses were following one another when a strong wind blew the trailer of the first minibus.

The second bus hit the trailer.

The first minibus then rolled several times.

No one was hurt in the second bus.
