Uefa’s refusal on Roque honour sparks indignation in Spain

2012-06-27 14:32

Spanish football has reacted with indignation to the decision of European football’s governing body Uefa not to permit a minute’s silence in honour of Miki Roque before today’s Euro 2012 semifinal between Spain and Portugal.

Roque, a defensive midfielder for Liga club Betis, died on Sunday from pelvic cancer at the age of 23.

On Monday, the Spanish Euro 2012 squad held a minute’s silence in his memory at their training camp.

The Spanish federation then asked Uefa for a minute’s silence before today’s semi, and that the Spanish players be allowed to wear black armbands during the game.

Just hours before the match, however, Uefa turned down the requests, provoking indignation and stupor in Spain.

The website of Catalan daily Sport called the refusal “totally incomprehensible” and pointed out that Uefa permitted a minute’s silence before last week’s clash between France and Sweden, in honour of French journalist Thierry Roland.

Meanwhile, the website AS said that the Spanish squad was “absolutely disappointed” at Uefa’s decision, whilst radio station Cadena COPE called it “astonishing and disgraceful.”
