South Africa are favourites to win the inaugural World University Netball Championship at the Good Hope Centre in Cape Town today.

South Africa, who are unbeaten in the tournament thus far, lock horns with Great Britain in final.

Great Britain beat Ireland 52-37 in their semifinal after South Africa had beaten Jamaica 41-39 earlier yesterday.

The championships, which started on Monday, saw the best student athletes competing against each other for the gold medal.

The tournament was played in two pools of four teams.

South Africa was pitted against Ireland, the United States and Zimbabwe in Pool A.

The teams in Pool B were Jamaica, Namibia, Great Britain and Uganda.

Proteas goalkeeper Vanes-Mari du Toit said: “People should start realising that netball can be a very exciting game and I hope they will come out and support us next week in our home series against Northern Ireland.”

Great Britain’s captain Natalie Haythornthwaite said: “We’re very excited and really happy that we’ve made it into the final. So, for Saturday game to go well, we’ll have to do the basics right and keep control. It’s going to be a tough game against South Africa.”

Ireland will battle out with Jamaica in the bronze medal match also on Saturday.
