Union and Metrobus close to settlement

2011-03-04 14:32

Johannesburg Metrobus drivers and management are nearing a settlement to end a three-week strike, the SA Municipal Workers Union said today.

Union spokesperson Dumisani Langa said the union and Metrobus had a meeting on Friday and were “very close to settling this thing”.

“Right now we can’t give details but I can assure you we are very close to finding one another on the issue.”

Langa was not in a position to give any more information other than that the meeting was held between 11am and 1pm at an independent advocate’s office in Sandton.

The negotiations would continue on Monday, Langa said.

Metrobus spokesperson Esther Dreyer could not be immediately reached for comment.

The strike, involving 70 Metrobus drivers, started on February 9 amid dissatisfaction about new shifts implemented on December 6.

Metrobus suspended the public bus service three weeks ago because of incidents of intimidation, with five non-striking drivers assaulted the week before.

Negotiations with the union deadlocked. The company then went to the Labour Court for a ruling to end the strike.
However, the Labour Court ruled that the strike was legal.

On February 22 Metrobus appealed the ruling. The appeal was unsuccessful.
