Union gets go-ahead for water strike

2011-08-30 09:36

Water sector employees have received the go-ahead to take part in a strike as a wage dispute is still unresolved, the South African Municipal Workers Union has said.

A conciliation meeting was held in Pretoria yesterday and a certificate of non-resolution was issued, said Samwu spokesperson Tahir Sema.

Water sector employers, including Rand, Magalies, Lepelle Northern, Bloem, Botshelo, Bushbuckridge, Amatola and Sedibeng Water, have offered 4.6% across the board.

Samwu is demanding a 15% increase or R1 700 across the board, whichever is greater, a R2 000 housing allowance, meal coupon increases, and standby and shift allowances of at least 15%.

The union also wants employers to allow six months’ maternity leave, acting allowance to be equivalent to the payment at a higher post, an increase in the tool allowance, and for wet and dry trade artisans to be paid on the same level.

It also wants employers to pay medical aid contributions in full.

Samwu’s collective bargaining officer, Dale Forbes, slammed employers for offering below-inflation increases which would further impoverish workers.
