Union rejects Eskom offer

2010-07-01 11:16

The National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) has rejected

Eskom’s wage increase offer.

Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said at a media briefing in

Johannesburg yesterday: “Our members are agitated and ready to embark on strike

action to convince Eskom to accede to their demands.”

Jim said a team of lawyers was looking at the legal aspects to

ensure that should workers strike it would be legal.

Because Eskom is an essential service, industrial action will

likely be illegal.

He was not certain when the workers would down tools but said the

union was going back to the negotiating table with the parastatal.

Yesterday Eskom offered workers an 8.5% wage increase across the

board and R1000 housing allowance.

Jim said: “This offer was overwhelmingly rejected by our

members.”

The union is demanding a 9% wage increase across the board, R2500

housing allowance and six months’ paid maternity leave.

Numsa also called on the government to work jointly with Eskom to

ensure the dispute was resolved.
