Unions to respond to Lonmin offer by noon

2012-09-14 06:35

Unions will consider a wage offer from Lonmin before responding to the company at noon, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said.

“As soon as it is presented (to workers) and considered, we will reconvene at 12 o’clock,” said NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka today.

Lonmin tabled the offer to workers yesterday evening.

“The offer will be communicated to employees at the hill where they have been waiting for feedback,” said Lonmin spokesperson Sue Vey.

She said the company was expecting a response by noon today.

Neither Vey or Seshoka could reveal details of the offer.

Workers at the Lonmin mine have been striking for four weeks, demanding a salary increase to R12 500.

Last month, the protest turned violent and police shot dead 34 protesters and injured 78.

A total of 45 people have been killed in incidents related to the strike.
