Unisa appoints new pro vice-chancellor

2010-11-23 13:05

The University of SA (Unisa) announced today that Professor Narend Baijnath will take up the post of pro vice-chancellor from the beginning of next year.

Baijnath would replace Professor Mandla Makhanya who was appointed to take over the top position of vice-chancellor from the beginning of next year.

University spokesperson Doreen Gough in a statement said the office of the pro vice-chancellor is responsible for the academic portfolio of the university, which includes the deputy vice-chancellor and vice-principal for learner support and student affairs, the vice-principal for academia and research, and the registrar.

Makhanya’s appointment as vice-chancellor is being contested in the High Court in Pretoria by the university’s Convocation President Professor Themba Sono.

Business day reported yesterday that Sono claimed the university’s council disregarded the recommendations of three university bodies when, by vote, it appointed Makhanya to replace retiring vice-chancellor, Barney Pityana.

Sono, the newspaper reported, argued that Professor David Mosoma should have been appointed to the top post.

The university opposed Sono’s application to review the process by which Makhanya was appointed.

“The university is opposing the review application because council is confident that it closely followed the appointment process as set out in the statute of the university,” said Gough.
