Uptown Girl: Happy 20-heaven

2011-01-11 12:45

Happy! Well, at least I am – and sincerely hope you are too.

While we’re on the subject of a new year, next time you see me, if you intend to tell me “compliments of the new year”, I had better hear a real compliment follow.

Anyhow, this fabulous girl couldn’t have wished for a better start to the new year. I have a feeling that this is going to be a great year for me. Big things popping – if you know what I mean.

First off, I knew it was going to be an extra special one when I managed to enjoy my New Year’s Eve (NYE) celebrations. I never enjoy New Year’s – ever. It all started back in the day when my family still lived in Polokwane and had to return home every festive season – like a proper Jozi mine worker – every school holiday.

There, I would spend my days in the sweltering heat just doing nada but watch TV and go to the shopping centre. I would’ve said “mall”, but this was long before Savanna Mall was built. (Did I just give away my age?)

So, my days usually stretched to the point where I could literally see the sun move – and it was really slow to get to the darned New Year’s Eve so that I can go back to school.

Our family New Year’s celebration consisted of my uncle setting the fire for the braai, we cooked the lunch and dinner, while my mom and aunts had a whale of a time. It was worse for me because I was too young to drown my sorrows in alcohol.

For a couple of years, until I started working in Johannesburg where I had a place of my own, this was the norm.

When I started celebrating my New Year’s here, I was positive that things would be different, only to discover that the rest of Joburg had migrated to parts unknown. Ok, ok, the parts happen to be their homes, which include Polokwane.

So, here I was all ready to party like I invented New Year’s only to find out that nobody I knew was throwing anything.

Not even a piece of paper!

Last year, I gave the clubbing thing a try and I actually had a nice time. Nothing to write home about but definitely much better than sitting at home with my dear side-kick cousin Dudu and drinking ourselves silly.

This year, our little group included my BFF, Janine, and we still went out clubbing, in the hopes that it would be just enough to get us through NYE. After a couple of champagne glasses and shooters later we took our great-looking selves to new hot spot Hush in Rosebank for the Moët et Chandon NYE party and, lo and behold, the club was packed.

Not only was it packed, but we knew most of the people there. The music was great, the champagne was on tap, the Patron was flowing, the vodka was free, the music was out of this world. Basically, we had all the ingredients needed to have a good time.

It’s a bit of a blur, but I know we danced like we were paid. At some point, yours truly was lying on her back, on the floor dancing (never to be done again) and I think I kissed someone. I just can’t remember who. So, basically I had more of a good time than I intended. This tells me it’s going to be a super year. Happy 20-heaven!

PS. The countdown to my birthday has officially begun. 05-02-2011 is the day I outdo Kenny Kunene (with your help, of course).
