Utatu fumes as Transnet strike continues

2010-05-21 08:23

The Transnet strike was set to continue today after the employer

refused to allow one of the striking unions to return to work, the United

Transport and Allied Trade Union (Utatu) said.

“What we’re very unhappy about is that we were ready to sign with

Transnet and Transnet did not want us to sign,” said Utatu general secretary

Chris de Vos.

Utatu had been prepared to accept Transnet’s most recent offer and

had announced they would sign it at 4pm yesterday.

However, Transnet refused to allow them to sign because the other

striking union, the SA Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (Satawu) had not yet

received agreement from its members.

“We believe it was irresponsible of them [Transnet],” said De

Vos.

“The clients must now point the finger at management.”

The strike at Transnet began with Satawu on Monday May 10. Utatu

joined the next day.

Transnet employs nearly 54 000 people. Satawu represents 39% and

Utatu represents 45% of the workers.

Comment from Satawu and Transnet was not immediately available.
