VIP politicians have a choice regarding security

2013-03-10 10:00

The editor’s note, “Bling life going out of political fashion” (City Press, March 3 2013 ), refers.

Every so-called VIP politician can instruct their security about what they are prepared to accept and what they are not prepared to accept.

There’s no law that says a VIP has to take a private holiday at taxpayers’ expense and with security provided by the state.

When I became Western Cape premier, the security tried the same on me.

Even when I went to church, they had to be there.

I then made a rule: they may follow their protocols when I am on official duties, still minimally.

But no blue lights, no convoys and no heavies. Just minimal non-invasive security.

When I am in my private capacity, it is clear: no security.

I go on holiday and to dinner with my family.

I visit friends, when invited, and without security.

This nonsense that VIPs have no choice is absolute that – nonsense.

Who sets the rules? We do.

How do you, Ferial Haffajee, fall for Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe’s line that he has no say in the matter?

Next is to accept President Jacob Zuma’s line that he had no say over Nkandla.
