Van Blerk the one to watch in Spar Women’s Challenge

Reigning SA 10km champion Irvette van Blerk will be the one to watch in the Spar Women’s 10km Challenge on August 27.

The event, which is expected to attract 20 000 female runners, will take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion, Pretoria.

Van Blerk won the senior national championships in 34.03 as she defended her title last month.

The Nedbank Central Gauteng Athletics runner said she aimed to make the top three in the race dubbed the “beautiful race”.

“The atmosphere is great in the Spar events and I’m looking forward to this one. I am not chasing a specific position as long as I make the top three, I’ll be happy,” said the 23-year-old at the launch of the race at the Irene Country Club today.

Van Blerk, who will jet off to New York this evening for low-profile 5km and 10km races, is currently leading the Spar Women’s Grand Prix leaderboard, in which the overall winner will pocket R60 000 at the conclusion of the series in Johannesburg in October.

Other accomplished female road runners to look out for in the event – which also offers the 5km distance – are Rene Kalmer, Annerien van Schalkwyk, and Zimbabwean-born Thabita Tsatsa.

Kalmer, who recently qualified for the IAAF World Championships in the marathon, is another hot favourite to ascend the podium.

Entry forms are available at selected SuperSpar, Spar and KwikSpar stores.

Alternatively, athletes can enter online at www.ladiesrace.co.za or call the enquiry line on 011 203 5399.
