Corruption Watch director David Lewis has denied a report claiming Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi was fired from the anti-corruption watchdog’s board.

The report, put out by news agency Sapa, has since been retracted.

Lewis says Vavi has been “censured”, which means he has been reprimanded for his conduct involving sex with a junior Cosatu employee.

Today, Vavi apologised again to SA Democratic Teachers’ Union members in East London for his behaviour, saying he was now a “compromised leader”.

“I am compromised because of my own regrettable transgressions, which have caused immense harm, not only to my family but (to) my standing as a working class leader whose focused, forthright and honest leadership was, until this point, questioned by only a few in society.”

He said he had accepted the “humiliating” public censure from Corruption Watch, and also apologised to the family of the married woman who has accused him of rape.

“At the right time I will ensure that both families close this chapter in the right way in line with our traditions and customs,” he said.
