Vavi wants single public sector union

2010-09-28 13:34

Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi has called for the creation of a single public sector union with specialised units to represent the various areas in the public sector.

“That is the single and most important lesson from the public sector strike,” he told delegates at a National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) national congress in Ekurhuleni.

Vavi said the three week long public sector strike was a success.

“For the first time in a long time public servants forgot about divisions of the past and united behind common demands.

“The strike also demonstrated the fallacy of the claim made by some who usually claim that Cosatu’s alliance with the ANC is compromising independence and workers’ interests.”

Vavi admitted that misunderstandings among union members had erupted during the strike following allegations that some union leaders had sold out the workers.

He took delegates through the process of negotiations that had taken place and explained how the last meeting with ministers was interrupted by a call from a senior official to discontinue negotiations.

“The only mistake the leaders committed was to twice propose a settlement area without canvassing this properly with their provincial structures,” he said.
