The year could not have started better for the 10-year-old Khayelitsha-based Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy.

Velokhaya, which had a stellar 2014, has secured Rand Water as a title sponsor.

The new partnership will see its name change to Velokhaya Rand Water Competitive Team. The water and sanitation company joins supplements partner Cadence Nutrition, eye-wear supplier One Sight Foundation and chain lubricant provider Squirt Lube.

This week, team manager Sipho Mona enthused: “We are delighted Rand Water has recognised the many years of work and commitment put in by team members and management.”

The team, which has produced top road cyclists Luthando Kaka, Songezo Jim and Nicholas Dlamini, has also announced its extensive 2015 programme, aimed at improving last year’s performances that saw it gain a number of podium places in provincial events.

They won the western province time trial championships and also competed in South Africa’s only international road race, the Mzansi Tour.

“We are currently in a training camp that started on Wednesday and will finish on Tuesday in Sutherland,” Mona told City Press.

“We will then migrate to Jozi for a month of racing with the ultimate goal being preparing for the South African Championships, which will be held from February 3 to 8 in Mpumalanga.”

The team had a fairy tale beginning in 1999 when Amos Ziqubu, a postman, was invited to the then Cape Argus Cycle Tour.

“He was amazed to see so many people taking part in a cycling race and a seed was planted.

“It would culminate in the founding of the Velokhaya team in 2004,” recalled Mona.

Meanwhile, Pietermaritzburg’s status as Africa’s Bike City will be further bolstered when it hosts the 2015 African continental championships – Track, from January 21 to 25.

The city, which has recently hosted a number of world-class events such as the UCI mountain bike and trials world championships, will also host the 2015 African continental championships – Road, next month.

Multiple national track champion Maroesjka Matthee and 2012 world track championship silver medallist Nolan Hoffman are expected to mount a serious challenge for the titles on offer.
