Venda change tune on Hlaudi ‘wife gift’

2014-06-22 06:00

A traditional Venda lobby group will today hold a press conference to “set the record straight” around allegations that it gave the SABC’s acting chief operations officer, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, a wife.

Mudzi wa Vhurereli ha vhaVenda insists the Sowetan got it all wrong when it reported that Motsoeneng was presented with a cow, a calf and a 22-year-old woman named Vanessa Mutswari as a “gift” during a visit to Venda earlier this month.

Motsoeneng was honoured with these “gifts”, the Sowetan reported last Friday, because he became the first senior SABC manager in 14 years to engage with the group about vhaVenda language issues.

The paper quoted the group’s executive secretary, Humbelani Nemakonde, as confirming that Mutswari had been given as a gift to Motsoeneng.

But Nemakonde has changed his tune.

“Sowetan deliberately distorted the facts to serve its agenda.

“We will hold a press conference in Johannesburg today, where we will tell the world what really happened.”

Sowetan editor Mpumelelo Mkhabela insisted that the report was factual. “We stand by our story,” he said yesterday.
