Hanoi – A woman who admitted stealing a baby boy from a hospital in Hanoi has told police she did it to placate her husband by pretending the child was her own, local media reported today.

Police arrested Nguyen Thi Le (29) in Hanoi yesterday, newspaper Tuoi Tre reported. She is accused of kidnapping the then two-day-old infant from his mother, Tran Thi Thom (34) on Thursday by dressing as a nurse and pretending to take the child for a blood test.

According to the report, Le told police she stole the child after she gave birth to a stillborn baby on October 25. Fearful of the reaction of her husband, who was not present at the birth, Le told him she had had a boy.

After stealing a nurse’s uniform from a clothes line, Le took the stolen baby to her husband’s family in the city’s Dong Anh district, and pretended it was hers. The hospital notified the police, who tracked Le down after receiving a tip-off from the taxi driver who drove her home.

The baby was in a healthy condition when recovered and returned to his mother yesterday, the report said.State-run newspaper Viet Nam News said Thom and her husband did not intend to press charges against the hospital.
