‘Vote ANC for Madiba’s legacy’

Do it for Madiba, the ANC has urged voters ahead of the first by-elections to take place after Nelson Mandela’s death last week.

“The African National Congress in North West calls on all the people of Tlokwe to go out in their large numbers to vote for the ANC in today’s by-elections and ensure that Madiba’s legacy continues,” provincial spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi said in a statement this morning. “The future of Tlokwe is in their hands.”

Mnisi further said: “As the ANC in North West, we dedicated this by-election in honour of President Nelson Mandela, our icon, our leader and the father of a democratic nation. Having been a beacon of hope to our country and the world, we see it befitting.”

Today’s by-elections in six wards are going ahead despite these taking place during the national mourning period following the death of Mandela.

They are also going ahead despite a court challenge, of which the DA is part, on the grounds that some people have registered in wards where they do not live.

The by-elections were originally scheduled for October 23, but were postponed to allow political parties and candidates more time to campaign following an out-of-court settlement.

By-elections are taking place in wards 1, 4, 11, 12, 13 and 20 of the municipality.

The seats were vacated when 14 ANC councillors were expelled from the party in July for participating in a motion of no confidence in then Tlokwe mayor Maphetle Maphetle.

He was replaced as mayor by Democratic Alliance councillor Annette Combrink.

The DA currently has a media blackout to observe the period of mourning for Mandela and hasn’t issued any statements about today’s elections. A party spokesperson has, however, confirmed that the party has been campaigning in Tlokwe.

“A total of 18 659 voters are registered in the six wards and 17 voting districts where by-elections will be taking place,” the Independent Electoral Commission said in a statement yesterday.
