Wanda Baloyi has been part of the local music landscape for over a decade – and these days, she’s doing things her way.

Wanda’s fourth album, Love and Life, is due for release next month. ‘This album is a very personal one and I hope my fans can feel that. I hope my message of love and freedom and growth comes across.’

She was 16 when she formed a music group, Ghetto Luv, with three friends. ‘I got into the scene because it was fun, but these days I take it more seriously because I’ve made a career choice to entertain.’

After her Ghetto Luv days, Wanda released three solo albums before taking a three-year break to regroup.

‘Removing myself from the music scene was a way for me to discover who I was and what exactly I wanted to do. I signed up at Unisa and studied entrepreneurship. I now employ these skills in my music career. Now that I’m back, I also feel I’m ready to express my authentic self through my sound.’

Although the 33-year-old is often confused for a jazz artist, she says she doesn’t consider herself one. ‘I like to think of myself as a fusion artist because my sound is influenced by the music I grew up listening to – this includes jazz, R&B and soul. I stay true to all those influences and make a sound that is an honest reflection of who I am.’

When asked who she would most like to collaborate with, Wanda says, ‘Definitely Thandiswa Mazwai. She is so talented and has managed to get her message across with her music. I look up to her.’

Best book … The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma. I’m at a point of self-discovery in my life and paying more attention to the little things in life that matter, so this book is relatable to me.

Most romantic date … I was taken on a boat cruise in Cape Town. We had champagne on the deck, strawberries, the works. That whole weekend was really special.

Favourite style item … I’m a sucker for handbags. I always match my outfits to my bag.
