Wanted: new Constitutional Court judge

2012-10-23 12:00

The Judicial Service Commission has called for nominations for a Constitutional Court judge to replace Justice Zak Yacoob.

Yacoob, who was appointed by former president Nelson Mandela, is set to retire in January after 15 years on the bench of the Constitutional Court.

Yacoob is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s foremost legal minds and is known for his probing and no-nonsense questions from the bench to lawyers.

He lost his sight due to meningitis when he was just 16 months old.

The last appointment of a Constitutional Court justice, in which Justice Ray Zondo was eventually appointed, led to raised eyebrows over the lack of suitably qualified candidates who make themselves available for the position.

That nomination process had to be postponed twice.

The Constitution requires the commission to prepare a list containing a surplus of three names over the number of appointments to be made.

This list is then submitted to the president for a decision.

Nominations for the position, which must be accompanied by a letter that says the candidate accepts the nomination, will close on November 23.

Interviews will be held on February 22.
