Waratahs break Stormers’ hearts

2013-05-11 14:14

Sydney – Israel Folau’s seventh try in his debut season of Super Rugby with three minutes remaining today gave the Waratahs a 21-15 win over the Stormers.

The Waratahs, plagued by turnovers against a tough Stormers defence throughout most of the second half, finally broke through after sustained pressure to allow Folau, a former rugby league star and Australian Rules footballer, to cross to the right of the goal posts.

Berrick Barnes, returning from injury as a replacement with 18 minutes remaining, converted Folau’s try and added a late penalty as the siren sounded for the final six-point margin.

It was the fourth consecutive home win for the Waratahs this season.

The Stormers, whose only scoring came from five penalty goals by Joe Pietersen, lost for the sixth time in 10 matches and sit in third place in the South Africa conference.

They play the Rebels on Friday in Melbourne.
