Christoff Becker has written an emotional letter to the department of correctional services, saying he doesn’t intend to appeal the parole board’s decision to send him back to prison for another 12 months.

Becker and Frikkie du Preez, two of the so-called Waterkloof Four, were rearrested after a video emerged showing them having a party in a jail cell shortly before they were released on parole last month.

In the letter, which City Press has seen, Becker wrote that he would use the next 12 months to “show the public and prison authorities that I am rehabilitated”.

“I accept responsibility for my deeds,” he wrote. The two were rearrested on February 16, after Rapport and City Press published stills from the video, which showed Becker laughing and posing for selfies.

They will serve at least another year behind bars in Kgosi Mampuru prison in Pretoria.

Correctional Services Minister Sbu Ndebele told Rapport on Friday he was “disgusted”, both by the pair’s actions and by the prison officials who allowed it to happen.

The minister said: “Rehabilitation is not just the responsibility of correctional services. It is also the community’s responsibility.”

A source close to the two yesterday said they had found it “very hard” being in Pretoria’s high-security C Max prison for the past two weeks.

“They are in single cells and can’t go out for even an hour a day to exercise,” the source said.

“Christoff’s parents, Mariette and Christo, are broken. They cried when they heard he will spend another year behind bars.”
