Waterkloof killer released: ‘I just want to go home’

2011-12-19 15:18

He just wants to go home, Reinach Tiedt, one of the Waterkloof Four, said following his release this afternoon.

“I just want to go home. I’m happy to be going home,” he said when leaving the head office of the Department of Correctional Services in Pretoria at 04:20pm, accompanied by his father.

Tiedt was placed on correctional supervision after serving part of a 12-year sentence for killing a homeless man and assaulting another. He and three other men, among them Gert van Schalkwyk, started serving their sentences in late 2008.

Van Schalkwyk was also released this afternoon, through the Cullinan regional correctional services department.

This comes after prison authorities initially ignored a court order for their release.

Tiedt, dressed in grey shorts, a red t-shirt and running shoes, carried a bulky bag full of clothes. A “777” tattoo was visible at the back of his neck.

He spent just over two hours at the head office of Correctional Services where he was informed of the conditions of correctional supervision.

Golden Miles Bhudu, president of the South African Prisoners’ Organisation for Human Rights (Sapohr), said Tiedt’s release was a “fallacy of justice”.

“The court was lenient in the first place with the 12-year sentence,” he said.

Bhudu has called on inmates to flood the high court with applications for the conversion of their sentences to correctional supervision.
