We understand white privilege

The contents of the piece “Race and Cape Town: Your colour matters at restaurants” singles out Four & Twenty as an establishment that perpetuates racist service.

But preferential treatment is not in the DNA of Four & Twenty.

We do, however, find ourselves in a difficult situation. Our restaurant can’t defend what happened, even though we can probably offer our own account.

It is difficult to defend our restaurant without sounding like we are belittling the author’s experience. It serves no purpose other than to add to the status quo: to ignore an issue that is most certainly still prevalent in our country.

We were completely unaware of the experience the author had, which consequently formed her opinion of our restaurant as inherently racist.

We are thoroughly investigating this incident as we never want anyone to ever feel discriminated against for any reason.

We understand the power of white privilege and understand it informs subconsciously, and sometimes overtly, the way the world treats us and how we understand the world.

It shouldn’t make us silent though.

As owners, we accept the author called us out.

No matter how intimidating the situation, to quietly feel marginalised is not the way we want any customer to feel.

We do not allow, tolerate or entertain any form of discrimination in our restaurant.

We will continue to drive this culture with our staff. Sometimes though, you have to speak up and help us out too.
