We’re no underdogs, say Congo ahead of Ethiopia clash

2014-01-16 15:19

The Democratic Republic of Congo are “ironing out” flaws ahead of the crucial Group C African Nations Championship encounter against Ethiopia at Free State Stadium tomorrow.

Kick-off is at 8pm.

This is a must-win fixture for both teams, who are yet to get off the mark in the group.

A second defeat will virtually guarantee a Congolese exit from the competition, and the Ethiopians aim to avoid the shock defeat that could see them bow out as well.

However, Red Devils coach Sebastien Migne gave the assurance that Congo were capable of a big upset.

“Our philosophy is to play and not let the opposition dictate to us,” the Frenchman said today.

“All the teams are good in this group, but we won’t be the underdogs. We didn’t bow down to Ghana [a 1-0 loss on Monday], and if we show the same spirit from that game then we can move mountains.”

Congolese senior player Prestone Lakolo added: “We had an honest talk with each other and the coach about our game against Ghana. We know there are things we need to iron out in our play heading to the next match.”

In the earlier match tomorrow (kick-off at 5pm), Libya will take on the Black Stars in a top-of-the-table clash.

Libyan midfielder Mohamed el Ghadi – who was player of the match in the 2-0 win over Ethiopia on Monday – said beating the pretournament favourites was their passage to their knockout stages ambition.

“I think the Ghana match will be key in getting us to the second round. We have to forget about what we did against Ethiopia and focus on this one,” he said.

“The players and the coach [Javier Clemente] are trying our best to get to the next stages.”
