What bandage shortage?

2012-01-03 14:47

The Gauteng Department of Health has refuted claims that patients of the Lillian Ngoyi clinic in Diepkloof, Soweto, had to wash bandages for re-use because of a shortage.

This came after DA provincial health spokesperson Jack Bloom said he had received complaints from patients about a shortage of bandages.

“Some patients are asked to buy their own bandages or washes bandages for re-use. Other Soweto clinics also experience bandage shortages, apparently because the supplier wasn’t paid,” Bloom said.

The department’s acting spokesperson Phumelele Khumalo said they were not aware of any shortage.

“The Johannesburg Region has assured us that there are enough bandages in all clinics in Soweto,” she said.

Bloom visited the clinic, located near the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, this morning.

He discovered that the clinic had experienced a shortage of bandages for about a month and had to borrow bandages from other clinics.

Khumalo urged patients to give them details of their visits and their concerns so they could investigate the allegations.

“The department encourages patients to report any matters of concern by calling hotline 0800 203 886. All complains are investigated thoroughly and dealt with accordingly,” she said.
