What government says it has done about Nkandla

2014-03-20 11:42

In a “preliminary” response to the release of Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report on upgrades to President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead, Cabinet says government has made progress on interventions related to the “Nkandla matter”.

1. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigation is “at an advanced stage and a report is expected soon”. “This report will form the basis for disciplinary action and/or criminal charges against implicated individuals. The report will be forwarded to the National Prosecuting Authority [NPA] for prosecutorial consideration.”

2. The department of public works has developed “a revised policy of norms and standards for management and control of particular prestige projects [Nkandla was known as “Prestige Project A”]. It closes loopholes that were identified by the government investigation reports such as approval systems, financial delegations and tightens controls on supply chain processes”.

3. Public Works has finalised the cost apportionment of the project for recovery of funds from the SA Police Service and the defence department. At a press briefing, Cabinet could not provide further clarity on this point.

4. The defence department has set up a board of inquiry to investigate irregularities during the project.

5. The Ingonyama lease agreement has been signed.
