What shortage of female editors?

2011-11-09 12:39

It is quite shocking and disappointing that a senior government official like Lakela Kaunda, the director-general in the Presidency, can bluntly voice a misleading and uninformed view about leadership transformation in the print media.

In her piece, titled “Pack behaviour runs counter to transformation” (City Press, October 23 2011), she falsely and wrongfully claims that the print media has a “shortage of female editors”, among other issues she raised.

Firstly, the very publication she submitted her article to is led by Ferial Haffajee, a well-respected journalist in South African print media.

Is Haffajee not a female editor?

Further examples include Zingisa Mkhuma, who heads Pretoria News; Destiny magazine owner and manager Khanyi Dhlomo; Karima Brown, who is the joint editor of Southern Africa Report; and editor-in-chief of Eyewitness News Katy Katopodis.

Certainly, the print media is not perfect and has a lot to work on, but there are changes taking place.

The recent Press Freedom Commission is proof of this.I expect a person of Kaunda’s calibre to paint an informed picture and not just spin the state agenda.

We know the situation on the ground better than some of you sitting in your
air-conditioned offices.
