What’s inside Anele’s bag

2011-06-03 13:51

Anele Mdoda boasts a CV that has seen her come from Tuks Campus radio – along with her partner in crime and 5FM show co-host Grant Nash – to hosting big events such as Miller Rock the Boat and last week’s Africa Day concert.

She and Nash made their big debut on Joburg-based Highveld FM before being snatched by national caster 5FM a year later. But most people really noticed Mdoda when she made the top three of Strictly Come Dancing.

Despite a busy schedule – a radio show, presenting on Top Billing, SA’s Got Talent, Power of Five and hosting events – Mdoda claims to have a close relationship with her couch.

“I am a huge couch fan, me and my couch are close friends. In fact I need to get a new couch because the one I have has caved in because I sleep on it and spend most of my time on it.”

Her bag is proof that she carries her life and work with her wherever she goes . . .

» The first thing she whips out is a CD pouch with three discs inside – Beyoncé’s I am Yours, Mbongeni Ngema’s Stimela Sam and the Sarafina! soundtrack.

“I am a huge Beyoncé fan and many people know that. I also love Sarafina!, I play that every day in my car and it’s a great sing-along. Stimela Sam is another of my favourite songs, so I have that to keep me singing as well.”

» Then she pulls out a book called Life by Keith Richards. “A friend of mine got that for me on my birthday.

“She knows I just finished reading Anthony Kieder’s biography and this one is a great read too.”

» Her black BlackBerry Torch and charger are next. Mdoda admits her phone is “only in there because I’m in the studio”.

“How else were you going to get hold of me? Also, I tweet a lot.”

» Keys to an Audi A1, for which she is an ambassador, come out next.

“They have the registration number stuck on the back because I can never remember it. I’m clueless when I get to gates and have to give my registration number to the security guards.”

» Then it’s the black and white sunglasses. “I sleep in planes and I am not a great sight when I sleep so I always slip on my shades.”

» Passport. “I have to get my UK visa because I am leaving in 15 days to interview Kings of Leon who are coming to South Africa soon.”

» The make-up bag is next and is loaded with blushers, three different lipstick shades, eye-shadow, powder, mascara and foundation. “This thing makes it possible for me to be ready for anything in just a few seconds.”

»
Two bangles. “Grant bought me the cream one with silver studs when he was in Italy. They tend to come in handy when I accessorise at times.”

» Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream and Blistex. “I am conscious how my lips look. I generally don’t care how everything else is as long as my lips look good.”

» Then she takes out her perfumes, Alien and Amor Amor, which she immediately sprays on. “Two scents for two different times of the day. During the day I wear Amor because it’s floral and people can smell me before I can get there. At night I love Alien’s low-key smell.”

» ViralGuard and berry-flavoured Med-Lemon. “I hate being sick, it makes me miserable. But the ViralGuard is good for my voice and I use it to spray the microphone in the studio when someone has just been there.”

»
She holds up a written note and some pens which she says can be life- savers when she meets her fans. “That note is from a kid who asked me to call out his name on air. And, yes, I do get a lot of people asking me to do this.”

» Colourful wallet. “It has my cards and everything I need.”

» She discovers a R20 note in a side compartment of her bag and jumps for joy.

“Thank God I found that so I can pay for the parking!”

» Talking about her bag, she says “its a freebie you get if you subscribe to Fair Lady”.
