Who is Michael Peega

2010-03-21 09:20

AN internet search on Michael Peega does not reveal much. Of the

134 hits on Google, many link him to the dossier which claimed a conspiracy at

the South African Revenue Service against people linked to President Jacob

Zuma.

Peega (35) grew up in Garankuwa, north of Pretoria. He matriculated

in 1992 before joining the South African National Defence Force in 1999. The

positions he held with the SANDF’s special forces unit included involvement in

clandestine operations and being a member of the explosives branch and hostage

release teams.

Peega was hand-picked by Sars for his skills and was employed as a

special agent in its customs border control unit, which dealt with organised

crime including drugs and cross-border abalone dealing.

Sars dismissed him in June last year after he was arrested by

police probing a major international syndicate involved in illegal poaching. He

signed a confession – which he later said was forced out of him – admitting to

receiving payment for his activities in the syndicate.

Late last year he approached several media houses with an

intelligence dossier on alleged illegal activities within Sars and plots to

discredit several people linked to Zuma. While employed at Sars, Peega

apparently bragged to colleagues about his connections to influential people.
