Former Assembly speaker Max Sisulu is expected to resign from Parliament today.

Sisulu was back to being an ordinary MP after he failed to get reappointed as speaker after his recent five-year term and after he failed to secure a Cabinet position.

ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete was last week reappointed speaker after serving as speaker from 2004 to 2008 and after failing in her bid to be appointed deputy president alongside Cyril Ramaphosa.

It is believed that Mbete was appointed speaker in a bid to appease her and also in an effort to get the ANC’s gender balance right in its top appointments.

Sisulu also apparently angered some in Luthuli House after he set up an ad hoc committee to review President Jacob Zuma’s response to the Public Protector’s report about the R246 million worth of security upgrades at Nkandla while he was speaker.

Two sources close to the ANC caucus said Sisulu’s resignation would happen today, while another said it’s expected to happen either today or tomorrow.

ANC caucus spokesperson Moloto Mothapo said caucus had not received any official confirmation of Sisulu’s resignation.

Sisulu was getting into a plane when he was called for comment, and said he wasn’t in a position to speak.

It is not clear what Sisulu is planning to do next.
