Will champion Wladimir Klitschko meet his match in Alex Leapai?

2014-04-25 17:02

The last time Wladimir ‘Dr Steelhammer’ Klitschko lost a fight was more than a decade ago. He has lost just three times in 64 outings.

One of his losses was to the late SA great Corrie Sanders.

Klitschko has dominated the heavyweight division and the retirement of foes like Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson in the mid-2000s cemented his supremacy.

Sunday morning’s fight, in which Klitschko will put all four of world championship belts at stake against Alex ‘The Lionheart’ Leapai, is expected to be a walk in the park for the big Ukrainian.

Leapai is a relatively unknown Samoan-Australian professional boxer who has never held a world championship belt but is now on the eve of his first and probably last title fight.

On paper, Klitschko has got the fight in the bag but don’t rule out an upset entirely.

Ask former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson about his face-off with James ‘Buster’ Douglas in 1990.

Tyson, then seemingly invincible, had never tasted defeat but got the shock of his life when he found himself failing to beat the 10-count after Douglas had sent him to the canvas in round 10.

If this could happen to one of the most brutal and powerful boxers of all time, there is no reason why it cannot happen to Klitschko.

Just like Klitschko, Tyson put all his world championship belts on the line against Douglas. And Douglas had never won a world title prior to the confrontation – Leapai has never been in a world title fight.

By 7am on Sunday morning, either Klitschko will still be the champion or Leapai will have pulled off one of the biggest upsets in history.
