Will the real owner of FC AK stand up?

2011-07-09 18:15

Controversy-prone FC AK is caught up in yet another scandal as a tug-of-war over ownership has engulfed the National First Division outfit.

It has emerged that the Eldorado Park, Joannesburg club has two “legitimate” owners.

These developments threaten to leave the inland stream club in tatters, with just more than a month to go before the new season starts.

The club belonged to Aziz Kara, who was banned from all football activities for 30 years after being found guilty of bribery and corruption.

He then transferred ownership to his mother-in-law, Catharina van Staden.

City Press is in possession of a certificate of ownership issued by the Registrar of Companies confirming her as the sole director of the club.

However, Glen Taaibosch has also laid claim to the side, insisting he has been the chairperson and owner of the side since Kara’s ban in 2008.

Last month Taaibosch sent a letter to First National Bank revoking the signing authority of the club’s CEO Gene Petersen and a Ms Marcelle Turner.

Taaibosch claimed in the letter to be the sole director and owner of FC AK.

This week, Van Staden responded by sending proof to the league that she is the legal owner and custodian of the club.

PSL’s acting chief operations officer Ronnie Schloss on Friday said the league was aware of the matter and had since handed it to their legal team.

“We have a sales agreement when the club was transferred from Aziz to somebody, and now we have a letter from other people saying they are the rightful owners. The matter is with the legal department which is expected to make the pronouncement in due course,” said Schloss.

Van Staden referred the matter to the club’s legal representative, advocate Pierre Springfeld who was reluctant to reveal more.

He confirmed to City Press that he would be challenging the matter in court and further warned legal steps would be taken against anyone found to be misrepresenting the club.

“An attempt has been made to steal the club. Mr Taaibosch is neither the owner nor shareholder according to Companies and Intellectual Property Registration Office database,” said Springfeld.

He further said that they were in the process of suspending Petersen for dereliction of duty.

“A proper disciplinary hearing will be called where he will be afforded the opportunity to answer the charges.”

Petersen denied he was involved in the purported

hijacking of the club, saying he had since engaged legal counsel to deal with these “malicious rumours”.

“It’s absolutely untrue. This is an attempt to rubbish my name. I just had a bad disagreement with the boss after I recused myself from the meeting and now this,” said Petersen.

He then set the cat among the pigeons by claiming that he knew Taaibosch was the club’s rightful owner.

“Glen has been the owner since 2008 after Aziz was banned and there is a legitimate agreement in place to that effect.”

He said he would reveal all this week after he has founded out exactly what is happening. Taaibosch also said he was the legitimate owner of the club.

“How can I steal the club when I am the rightful owner?” he asked. “There is paperwork and the PSL has everything.”
